Preparing End of Life Documents

Regarding End of Life documents, Attorney Michael Tricoli shares “It’s important to make things as easy as possible for loved ones. It can be difficult for loved ones left behind, as they grieve and deal with all the emotions that come with loss, to start from scratch and figure out getting a family member’s affairs in order that did not create or provide legal documents or share their wishes before death.”

Attorney Tricoli was on the Lillian McDermott Radio Show/Classroom on March 22nd. Attorney Tricoli and Mrs. McDermott discussed preparing end of life (EOL) documents in the session “Getting Our Affairs in Order, Michael Tricoli, Esq.”

During the segment, Attorney Tricoli went over 8 important items, which include specific legal documents, that all stages and ages of life should consider, especially those who are older. They are:

  • Wills

  • Power of Attorneys

  • Living Wills

  • Healthcare Surrogate Designation

  • Guardianships

  • Listing Beneficiaries/PODs (payable on death) on bank accounts and other financial accounts

  • Nonprobate methods of transferring real estate (such as Lady Bird Deeds or Quitclaim Deeds)

  • Funeral and Cremation Arrangements

This checklist is not inclusive of all legal documents that are pertinent to EOL, but serve as an informative short summary to legal documents that loved ones should be aware of and should consider.
